John Gallagher has been a member of the SCO Board since 1994, making him the second-longest serving Board member. He is Chair of the Program Committee and a member of the Governance Committee.

John served as Suffolk County Police Commissioner, the 12th largest urban police department in the U.S., for seven years until his retirement in 2004. He previously served as: Assistant Deputy County Executive, advising the County Executive on public safety Issues; Executive Dean of Suffolk Community College’s Grant campus at Brentwood; Suffolk’s Chief Deputy County Executive, the highest appointive office in county government; and Senior Vice President at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NY.

John has a distinguished record of service to his community. He held gubernatorial appointments to the Advisory Council of the State University at Stony Brook and was elected Board President of the Police Reserves of Suffolk County. He served six terms as Chairman of the Suffolk Chapter of the American Red Cross, followed by a term on the NY State Red Cross government relations committee.

John is a graduate of the FBI National Academy’s prestigious National Executive Institute and was a guest lecturer at the Academy in Quantico.

He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Dowling College in 1999 and an honorary doctorate from St. Joseph’s College in 2003. John holds an MA degree from Columbia University, where he was a NY State Regents fellow. When he retired in 2004, John was awarded the Suffolk Medal of Honor by the Suffolk County Executive. The Suffolk County Police Academy was renamed the John C. Gallagher Suffolk Police Academy by the Community College Board of Trustees in his honor. He is a part-time teacher at Suffolk Community College and a consultant to several corporate and public clients and chair of Stony Brook Hospital’s Quality Assessment Review Board.

He resides in Miller Place with his wife, Patricia.
